Wafels and Dinges

after class today, i hung out with carmen and we were trying to decide on a place to eat or just grab a snack. I wanted to try something different so i looked through my phone for spots i been wanting to try.

Il Laboratorio del Gelato
There was this gelato spot in LES i found out about a while back and been wanting to try called il laboratorio del gelato. I was hype cuz i finally had a chance to go and the weather was nice. I get there like 5:50 and the metal store gate was down and they were closed. carmen checked the store hours on her phone and it said they were suppose to close at 7:00. wtf?

This disappointment made me fiend for ice cream. I heard that Jacques Torres started serving ice cream so that was my next alternative.

Jacques Torres
I head over across town to Jacques Torres shop in west village on Hudson. Carmen jokingly said while walking there "imagine they're closed" we get there at 7:02 to find out it closed at 7. bleh.
To make thing even worse, the window featured high-def pics of their ice cream saying how i should try it. low blow.
then i read that the ice cream was only served at the brooklyn location so that made it less disappointing.

failing twice, i unwillingly resorted to walking back to greenwich village to this place formerly known as Yogurtland, Phileo Yogurt. I still call it Yogurtland cuz "Phileo" just sounds awkward and perverted.

On the way to Yogurtland, a block away, i see this yellow waffle truck. I'ved walked by this place so many times but never got anything. I saw that they had ice cream as a topping on the waffles on the menu so i was down.

Wafels and Dinges
Wafels is the Belgian way of spelling waffles.
Dinges (ding-gus) means things, a term used for the toppings on the waffles.

I decided to order the crispy waffle, aka the Brussels waffle topped with slices of strawberry, banana, two scoops of vanilla ice cream, whip, a little powdered sugar and topped with melted Nutella.

I'm not really a dessert person but this was one of the best things i ever ate in my life. This is up there with DiFara's. Everything was just perfect. The waffle was hot, crunchy, light and soft in the middle and a little sweet was perfect the cold ice cream with the fresh tart of the strawberries and sweet soft bananas and the chocolate hazel nut nutella. Amazing!!! though it was $8.00, it was well worth it.

Conclusion
this may seem kinda corny, like "things happen for a reason" bullshit, but im glad that i missed out on Laboritorio del gelato and jacques torres ice cream or i prolly would of have never discovered my new obsession.

try it out, theyre located at different locations everyday. check out the site to see where theyre at for the week.

--------------UPDATE ON WAFELS AND DINGES---------------

the second visit, Ive ordered the pulled pork and cole slaw on the brussels waffle. It was so good. The warm crispy waffle was perfect balance with the warm and spicy pulled pork with the sweet and cold cole slaw.

after the first two visits, i started to lose interest.
I decided re-order the ice cream combo pictured above a couple weeks later and it wasnt as good. I ordered the pulled pork again and it also wasnt as great as I originally tasted.

In the course of 3 weeks, ive tried pretty much everything on the menu.
-de verdekke (waffle ice cream sandwich)
-de throwdown (liege waffle with speculoos and whipped cream)
-bacon and syrup waffle

Maybe i got tired of it quickly, or maybe the first time i wanted ice cream so much that, at the moment, it became the most amazing thing ive ever ate.
Just like yogurtland, after i found out about it, i ate it so much til i got sick of it. maybe this is what happened with wafels and dinges.
Maybe my mind just hyped it up and it wasnt as good as it really is.
i think it might be one of those foods that you really have be in the mood for in order to enjoy it.
